On this sunny winter Floridian day, we await commencement of the first Formula Drift Pro AM series held at Three Palms Speedway. My honest opinion about this series from the time it was announced was that it was crafted just for Floridian drivers who didn’t get their Pro 2 license from SWD. This is because the five events of the series are going to be held at the same track with slightly varying layout changes. However, it’s an overall good idea since in Florida we have no off season due to seasonal fluctuation compared to the upper north east. In their case, they only have about six months before the snow falls and inhibit the whole damn place. Maybe next year we shall see some out of staters take part in this series.
The grid was filled with some of the best Pro Am drivers this state currently has to offer: Kelsey Rowlings, Kevin Lawrence, Fello Ambivero and Kevin Phillips, just to name a few. With most of them coming from Central Florida, we’re experiencing a shift in the reign from the South Florida dominance of the early 2000s. With all this impressive driving, I was quickly reminded why these people are here, showing what they have to offer. They are all thirsty for the chance to be awarded with a Pro 2 license.
The event was awesome, with no hiccups in the schedule, the folks behind the event made sure it ran smoothly, plus the majority of the drivers were use to the Pro-Am style event. I would have loved to see some closer tandems and more aggressive driving, especially with how the track’s layout. However, it’s only the first round, so I guess the divers needed to get used to the format of the judges criteria first before showing out.
