“I woke up like this” face for it was Game day and I hope you brought your game face for the first event of the 2013 Street Wise Drift Pro Am. We know Kevin Phillips sure did and much more. With the proper shake down of his car some months ago, he was ready to dive head first into Pro AM arena.
After the world famous continental breakfast at the hotel Jake Downs, Luis Ochoa, and myself we made it to a very sparsely packed Central Florida Racing Complex. It was still early in the morning so this was expected. On our way to Kevin’s pit area we got a sense of the competition. With many cars from out of state from as far north as Virginia and Georgia, but there was a healthy amount of Floridian participates as well. Such as Kelsey Rowling’s decked out classy-in-pink SR20 S14, Brett Colins in his V8 Hatchback and Andrew Mensah in his Teal LS Powered BMW E36. Needless to say the competition seemed quite intimidating.
As the practice runs began it seemed like the majority of the cars were faster than Kevin. That shouldn’t be a problem because in drifting its not all about how fast your car is, it’s about skill and control. Unfortunately for Kevin a mishap happen and it caused Kevin to retire for the day earlier than expected. As we converged in the pits to comfort our pal with his grievance, I could see his frustrating building up. It’s always tough when you come so far and something other than yourself sets you back. But this happens to the best of us. Knowing him he will accept it pretty soon and use it as fuel for the next fire.
