In the groovy year of 1973 in month of love February, Mitsubishi introduced the world to the Lancer brand. The first Lancer (A70) was manufactured with the intent of filling in the spot between the Mitsubishi Minica kei car and the larger Mitsubishi Galant. As a in between car, it was the 1600 GSR model of the Lancer’s that would paved the way into a it’s glorious rally history, by winning the Safari Rally twice and the Southern Cross Rally four times. With the birth of Mitsubishi’s “halo” brand Ralliart in 1984, which is their high-performance and motorsport division. The company continued its success in rally, which in 1992 lead to the creation of the two liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive Lancer Evolution.
We were invited by Janet Quintana to shoot this bbq and gathering of what seemed to be a mating grounds of all the Lan Evos in the southern Florida. Who is she you might ask? Well Janet is a major key to the success of their chapter of evo enthusiast. As she is know for rallying(pun intended) up the troops and organizing multiple events for fans and enthusiast of this Mitsubishi classic. She is normally seen blazing up the streets in her Evo X(ten), but fortunately/unfortunately on this day it was not present as it is currently receiving some happy power upgrades!
I must admit my knowledge of this car was first introduced in my highschool days, when i was whooping my little brother on the rally stages of Gran Turismo 3 on playstation 2 with the tommi evo 6. I used to make him cry whenever he chose a Subaru WRX. Fortunately In Barbados where I spent my years in high school, there were a lot of rally events where I would get to see these cars fling mud, stir up dust clouds, take hella jumps and go sideways into corners(the real reason why I love drifting, is that I found a sport that slides cars into corners all the time).
However, these Lancer Evos featured here I’m sure never seen those murky conditions. And that’s fine, with Florida being a massive flat land area one could only imagine making these beast into wangan and road course killers. Our simply built for the true Mitsubishi enthusiasts spirit of owning into the racing, rally history which is the Lancer evolution.
